The publication Sukunimet (Family names in English), ISBN 951-1-12061-1, written by Pirkko Mikkonen and Sirkka Paikkala, states the following about the origin of the Turkki family name on page 645 :

"The name is probably associated with hunting, dressing and trading of furs (the Finnish word turkki means fur or Turkey). Compare that to one person named Jören Turkki in Lappee Parish in 1662, whose father-in-law was named Christer Kinnj (the Swedish word skinn means leather or hide)

"Near the end of 15th Century the name can be discovered mainly in South Karelia. For example, P Turcki (1554) in Uusikirkko (Province of Viipuri), Thomas Turcki (1568) and Nils Turkijn (1546) in Muolaa, and the family name Turkki (1543) in the village of Turkkila in Lappee Parish. Jakob Turcki lived in Kitee in 1614; Jakusko Turkuieff and Ignata Turkinen ödhe (1618) have been mentioned in Ilomantsi. Several entries can also be found further west. Nils Turcke has been registered in 1617 in Turku, Matti Turkki (1573) in Korpilahti, Michel Turcki (1571) in Hämeenkyrö, and Madzt Turcki (1680) in Ikaalinen."

Turkki families have mainly inhabited the following six parishes: Hiitola, Hämeenkyrö, Mäntyharju, Salmi, Säkkijärvi and Valkjärvi.
